Overview Reporting to the Executive Director of the Budget Lab, the Associate Director of Operations independently directs operational functions, enabling the Executive Director to focus on research. The Associate Director manages financial, administrative, and operational functions, implements system improvements, and coordinates across leadership, research, communications, consultants, and university partners. Strategic Planning Direct and execute the long‑term operational planning for the Budget Lab, developing strategic and research priorities in partnership with the Executive Director and leadership team. Financial Management Provides leadership in financial planning, budget management, and compliance across multiple funding streams, including gifts, endowed funds, and sponsored awards. Oversees sponsored award administration, ensures regulatory compliance, confirms viability of proposed projects, and supervises budget reports. Fundraising Operations Develops and implements fundraising and donor engagement strategies, directs proposal and report development, signals to the Office of Development, Office of Sponsored Projects, and Business Office to maintain policy compliance. Research Operations Directs resources, systems, and tools that support research mission, including publication and web operations, and oversees the launch and enhancement of web‑based research tools. Events and Communications Plans and executes all Budget Lab events and collaborates with communications for research dissemination through email, social media, and other channels. Staff Management Directs exempt and non‑exempt staff, hires, onboards, develops professional growth, and manages performance goals while ensuring compliance with university policies. Other duties as assigned. Nights: Occasionally Weekends: Occasionally Required Skills and Abilities Strong managerial and leadership skills, with demonstrated experience directing staff, managing budgets, and leading complex, multi‑stakeholder projects. Strong financial management skills, including experience directing budgets, financial reporting, and compliance across multiple funding streams. Superior organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities, with the capacity to direct multiple functional areas and manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse constituencies including faculty, staff, university administration, and external partners. Well‑developed decision‑making, planning, and strategic thinking skills, with demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and adapt to changing circumstances. Preferred Skills and Abilities Knowledge of Yale’s financial and administrative systems, including Workday, and familiarity with university policies and procedures. Experience in sponsored awards administration or finance management within an academic or research institution. Experience overseeing the development of data visualizations, interactive web tools, and other digital research products. Experience directing the evaluation and implementation of new systems, tools, and processes to improve organizational efficiency and research output. Prior experience managing both exempt and non‑exempt staff and demonstrated success fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. Principal Responsibilities Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs application of resources of an administrative university office dealing with one or more major functional areas. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. Plans and/or participates in planning university activities on a long‑term basis to comply with university goals and objectives. Establishes and implements consistent university‑wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. Ensures that university office policies and procedures comply with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with university strategies. Directs a staff of exempt and non‑exempt employees. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in related field and six years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
