Job Description

Mission Health, based in Asheville, NC, is seeking an Adult Oncology Nurse Navigator to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this patient-centered role, you will guide adult oncology patients and their families through every phase of the cancer care journey, from initial diagnosis to treatment, survivorship, or end-of-life care. Working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, you will coordinate care, provide education, and serve as a consistent point of contact, helping patients navigate complex medical, emotional, and logistical challenges. As an Adult Oncology Nurse Navigator, you will use your clinical expertise to perform comprehensive assessments, identify barriers to care, and advocate for timely, evidence-based treatment. You will collaborate closely with oncologists, surgeons, advanced practice providers, social workers, nutritionists, rehabilitation therapists, palliative care teams, and other specialists to ensure that each patient’s care plan is cohesive, well-communicated, and aligned with current oncology guidelines. You will facilitate appointments, diagnostic tests, and treatments, and you will help reduce fragmentation and delays in care by proactively tracking patient progress across settings and services. A key component of this role is providing clear, compassionate education tailored to each patient’s needs and level of understanding. You will explain diagnoses, treatment options, chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimens, radiation therapy, surgical interventions, potential side effects, and symptom management strategies. You will prepare patients and caregivers for what to expect at each stage of treatment and provide ongoing support to help them make informed decisions. You will also promote survivorship planning, wellness strategies, and adherence to recommended follow-up care once active treatment is completed. Because cancer care often involves significant psychosocial and practical stressors, you will conduct regular assessments of emotional, social, and financial needs and connect patients with internal and community resources, including social work, financial counseling, support groups, and palliative or spiritual care. You will use strong communication skills and motivational interviewing techniques to build trust, support coping, and encourage patient engagement in their care. In the day-to-day workflow, you will triage patient questions and symptoms via phone, electronic messages, and in-person encounters, using your clinical judgment to determine when immediate clinical evaluation or provider notification is needed. You will document all encounters, education, and care coordination activities accurately and efficiently in the electronic health record, ensuring continuity and regulatory compliance. You will actively participate in interdisciplinary care conferences and contribute to quality improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and experience within Mission Health’s oncology programs. Mission Health fosters a culture of teamwork, respect, and professional growth, and this position offers opportunities for ongoing education and career advancement within oncology nursing and navigation. The Adult Oncology Nurse Navigator role is ideal for a Registered Nurse with strong oncology knowledge, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a passion for guiding patients and families through one of the most challenging periods of their lives. This full-time role typically follows daytime weekday hours with some flexibility to meet patient and program needs. The position is primarily based in a clinical setting in Asheville, NC, with the potential for a hybrid mix of on-site and limited remote coordination and follow-up activities as appropriate. Mission Health offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, which may include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement savings options, and paid time off, in alignment with organizational policies.
