POSITION TITLE: Staff Associate - Art Gallery (part-time)

DEPARTMENT: School of Languages, Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Programs

REPORTS TO: Chief Curator

LOCATION: Fall River, MA

POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit professional without benefits, not to exceed 18.5 hours per week.

SALARY: $25/hr

STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

This position combines professional graphic design work with hands-on exhibition and installation. It is not a design-only position. The Gallery Staff Assistant must be comfortable moving between computer-based design tasks and physically demanding gallery work, often within the same week.

Work is carried out under the direction of the Gallery Director and emphasizes accurate execution, attention to detail, and adherence to established visual and installation standards. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, adaptable, reliable, and able to work collaboratively in an active gallery environment. Availability to work some Saturdays and occasional evenings or special events is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Design and produce print and digital promotional materials for exhibitions and gallery programs.
  • Assist with website updates and digital content management.
  • Support the creation of digital media projects (e.g., podcasts, videocasts) that extend the gallery's reach.
  • Actively participate in exhibition preparation and installation, including wall preparation, layout support, artwork handling, and deinstallation.
  • Work directly with artists during installation under the guidance of the Gallery Director.
  • Provide visitor services, including gallery sitting and public engagement.? Assist with opening receptions, special events, artwork transport, and storage. Support the creation of digital media projects (e.g., podcasts, vodcasts) that extend the gallery's reach.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator. etc.).
  • Portfolio must clearly demonstrate professional-level design work and process.
  • Ability and willingness to perform physical gallery preparation tasks, including:
  • Wall repair, patching, sanding, and painting? Measuring, leveling, and assisting with artwork installation
  • Use of hand tools and small power tools (training provided as needed)
  • Ability to follow detailed installation, layout, and finish standards with consistency and care.
  • Ability to work with outside printing vendors, including research, coordination, and working within established budgets.
  • Understanding of social media platforms and digital outreach for arts organizations.
  • Reliable, self-directed individual who is able to carry out assigned projects independently and ask questions at appropriate checkpoints.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to work with artists, faculty, students, and the public.
  • Comfort working within clearly defined roles, with curatorial, interpretive, and final aesthetic decisions resting with the Gallery Director.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally in a shared studio or gallery environment while maintaining focus, discretion, and appropriate boundaries.

ADDITIONAL CORE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graphic design proficiency is non-negotiable.
  • Candidates must have an Associate's degree or higher (or equivalent professional experience) with an emphasis in Graphic Design or a closely related field, and at least one year of professional design experience.
  • This role requires substantial hands-on exhibition work.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to assist with all phases of exhibition preparation and installation. Prior gallery or museum experience is preferred but not required; training will be provided for candidates who demonstrate aptitude, curiosity, and reliability.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work on ladders
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
