Network Engineer I

The Network Engineer I is responsible for supporting the installation, maintenance, and operation of the University's enterprise network infrastructure under the guidance of senior network engineering staff. Primary responsibilities include installing and configuring network switches as part of campus technology lifecycle initiatives, performing network port patching and switch port configuration throughout campus buildings, and replacing batteries and UPS systems to help maintain reliable network operations. This position also assists with basic network configuration, equipment installation, documentation, and troubleshooting, including diagnosing and resolving advanced network connectivity issues affecting endpoint devices and users. The Network Engineer I works under close supervision, follows established procedures and best practices, and develops technical skills while supporting the reliable operation of the University's campus network infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will have foundational knowledge of enterprise networking concepts, including TCP/IP, routing and switching fundamentals, and basic network security principles. Experience configuring and supporting switches, wireless infrastructure, or other network devices through coursework, certifications, internships, or professional experience is desirable. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, a willingness to learn, and the ability to follow established procedures while working under close supervision. Excellent communication and customer service skills are required, along with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and collaborate effectively with team members.

Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience supporting enterprise network environments through professional experience, internships, labs, or academic projects. Experience with Cisco networking equipment, network monitoring tools, wireless networking, or basic firewall administration is desirable. Industry certifications such as CCNA or equivalent networking credentials are preferred. Candidates who demonstrate initiative, a commitment to continuous learning, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are highly desirable.

Essential functions/job duties include:

  • 40% - Performs network support activities including port patching, cable toning, and configuring switch ports for appropriate VLAN assignments and connectivity requirements. Assists with diagnosing and troubleshooting network connectivity issues affecting endpoints, users, and connected devices. Performs basic network configuration, validates network connectivity, documents changes, and follows established procedures to resolve routine network issues.
  • 30% - Assists with the installation, configuration, and replacement of campus network equipment as part of ongoing technology lifecycle initiatives. Supports the deployment of switches and related network infrastructure, including equipment staging, installation, basic configuration, connectivity validation, and documentation. Works with senior network engineering staff to complete network upgrades and equipment replacements throughout campus facilities.
  • 15% - Performs routine maintenance activities for network infrastructure power systems, including replacement of UPS batteries and related components. Assists with maintaining reliable operation of network closets and supporting infrastructure by following established maintenance procedures and documenting completed work.
  • 15% - Provides assistance with other network engineering and Information Technology Services activities as assigned. May support equipment inventory, documentation updates, asset management, troubleshooting assistance, project activities, and other operational tasks that contribute to the reliability and effectiveness of campus technology services.
