The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is a federal law enforcement agency within the U.S. Department of Justice responsible for the custody, care, and rehabilitation of individuals convicted of federal crimes.

Responsibilities include:

• Provides supervision, care and correctional treatment of inmates and guidance to lower-graded Correctional Officers.
• Incumbent is concerned with maintenance of institution security contributing to the health and welfare of the inmates and the promotion of good public relations.
• Enforces rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct to ensure judicial sanctions are carried out and inmates remain in custody.
• From time to time, may be authorized to carry firearms and to use physical force, including deadly force, to maintain control of inmates.

Qualifications include:

• You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for employment.
• Generally must be at least 18 years old and typically not older than 37 at the time of appointment (with some federal law enforcement exceptions for veterans or prior federal service).
• Must pass a detailed background check, including criminal history, credit review, and drug screening. A disqualifying felony conviction will prevent hiring.
• Applicants must pass a medical examination and physical fitness standards to ensure they can handle the demands of correctional work (such as restraint situations and emergency response).
